Every week our garden is different. I’m the labor force: there’s always something to do. It usually involves weeding or pruning. It’s never ending and sometimes hard to appreciate because it looks back at us accusingly. Weeding, I only like (sort of) after the fact. Pruning is very satisfying, taking me back to Japan where they prune to show off shapes and color and negative space. Photographing the garden makes me look at it more carefully and appreciate it more. A few shots from a weekend – June 25, 26 2016.

we’ve been in this cottage on Long Island for 14 years. all of a sudden these incredible roses appeared this year, growing about twelve feet in front of our kitchen windows. such a gift!
